Overview
Sydney Institute can boast its fair share fair of superlatives. Founded in 1891 it is one of the oldest TAFEs of the state. Its more than 800 courses also make it one of the largest. Its strong cooperation with some of the leading companies makes it an attractive venue for tens of thousands of students every year. It comes as a small wonder that some of the TAFE’s graduates are now well-established personalities in their fields.
Location
Located in the heart of Australia’s biggest city, Sydney Institute is within close range of the major business districts, shopping centres, entertainment complexes, magnificent beaches and lush bush land. The area can best be described as diverse. Sydney’s CBD with icons such as the opera house, Harbour Bridge and Darling Harbour is not far away and can be reached by car or using the excellent public transport.
The climate is truly pleasant, with warm summers and mild winters with enough rainfall to guarantee rich vegetation.

The eight campuses of the TAFE are the following:

- Sutherland College, Gymea
- Sutherland College, Loftus
- Ultimo
Its Design Centre in Enmore is award-winning and educates students in the various aspects of the designer world. From 3D animation and digital effects through jewellery and object design to interior decoration – everything is possible.
The main campus of Sydney Institute is Ultimo. All of the campuses are equipped with top facilities which include a massage centre, an art shop and a well-stacked bookshop.
Students
Every year ten thousands of students choose Sydney Institute with about 1.000 of them hailing from 47 countries all over the world.
Main Program Areas
With over 800 courses to pick from the selection on offer is hard to summarize. The different program areas are adapted to the requirements of the local industry and prepare the students for future jobs or university. The portfolio includes education in Poetry and Playwriting, Real Estate and Valuation or Architectural Technology and many more.
Entry Requirements
These may vary from course to course. In general, it is necessary to provide a school education that is the equivalent to the Australian years 10-12 with passes in English. Furthermore, enrolment at TAFE NSW requires a minimum level of English language skills (equivalent of IELTS academic version min. of 5.5).
Student Activities
The possibilities for some quality time around the campuses of Sydney Institute are sheer endless. From a good night out on the town, enjoying Sydney’s spectacular nightlife, to some quite time in one of the museums, everything is possible. Combined with the efficient public transport system it is no problem to cram shopping, quality cuisine, a dip in the ocean and the dancing shoes all into one day. Recreational areas, such as the Royal National Park or the Blue Mountains National Park, are never far away and provide a soothing contrast to the bright city lights.
